Our Manifesto

Our Manifesto

Humans have evolved to move, walking and running across continents to populate the globe over 100,000 years ago. That desire for movement is innate and so strong, that many people move more than their body can tolerate with a central estimate of around 500 million people suffering from overuse injuries every year. BioRithm exists to eradicate these injuries.

BioRithm is building a new generation of biomechanical models that predict an individual’s fatigue state in order to optimise loading prescription. These models are designed to avoid injury by eliminating workload errors and accelerate recovery by optimising reloading.

We achieve this with a cluster of proprietary machine learning models, leveraging recent advances in artificial intelligence, and our models can power a number of consumer facing applications as well as provide a high value, low cost intelligence layer to healthcare practitioners.

The team behind the   at BioRithm

BioRithm was founded by three friends, Tom, Matt and James, with a shared love of sports performance and mathematics. This unique combination of interests with complimentary overlapping skills has created an atmosphere of idea generation and execution that is the bedrock of everything we do here at BioRithm.

About Tom Epton

Since graduating with a degree in physics Tom has had a varied career, he worked for just over a year as a post graduate computational physicist in the Zeppler Institute before ditching academia to pursue a career in professional triathlon. After competing in two multisport championships, one World and one European at senior elite level, he switched to long course racing which he did professionally until the end of 2024 though he still continues entering races with great enthusiasm. Alongside this he’s worked as a freelance writer with pieces published in the New World, been part of the team of three behind popular cycling physics engine myWindsock as well as building a data science consultancy. Tom has worked full time on The Running Algorithm since the start of 2025.

About Matt Plank

Matt has been writing software since before most people his age had heard the word algorithm. Starting professionally at 16, first in machine learning systems for cybersecurity, he went on to study computer science at the University of Leeds, freelancing throughout in web development and data analytics. A lifelong builder, he spent years developing personal projects on the side, including chess engines, while competing and training daily in jiu-jitsu, MMA, and wrestling. It was through his brother James that he met Tom, and the three began laying the groundwork for what would become The Running Algorithm. Matt leads the company's technical direction, and the machine learning systems at its core are his own design.

About James Plank

James completed his PhD in plasma physics in 2024, researching how turbulence and related physical processes shape the near-Earth space environment in which satellites operate. His first- and co-authored research has been published in several leading scientific journals. He later worked in the defence sector on long-range radio communications programmes, while also delivering freelance data science and software development projects for commercial clients. A lifelong athlete, James began in competitive swimming before moving through water polo, sailing, rowing and triathlon — where he met Tom — before ultimately focusing on endurance running. After leaving the defence industry in 2025, he relocated to the remote Arctic island of Svalbard to build The Running Algorithm full-time alongside his co-founders.

Our Products

Our Products

BioRithm has a strong portfolio of products under development which are built on top of our own models. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning underpin everything we build at BioRithm.

The Running Algorithm

BioRithm was born out of The Running Algorithm. Our first application and our pride and joy, TRA is a category leading training app which allows users to adjust any aspect of their training plan, skip sessions or do extra and then the future plan updates automatically. This allows our users to follow as much or as little as the training plan as they want to, safe in the knowledge that any run they plan at any moment will be the right run for that minute of that day in the context of the goals they’re trying to achieve.

Coming soon

The Running Algorithm allows users to upload “Other Activities” and it learns how these activities impact each users’ running. As a result, we’ve begun working on leveraging this data to build fatigue models specific to these other sports. On top of this, our behind the scenes work on “injury mode” within The Running Algorithm (to allow users that are experiencing pain to return to running pain free) has morphed into a much more complete B2B healthtech offering which we will be unveiling in Q4 of 2026.

BioRithm has a strong portfolio of products under development which are built on top of our own models. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning underpin everything we build at BioRithm. All BioRithm products have some element of user-specific learning at the heart of the product which means the longer someone uses our applications, the more the app learns about them. This creates a cascade of user experience quality, which continues increasing over time. This compounds buy in for customers and clients and we’re building an audience for whom lifetime value increases in both directions.
